Due to the characteristics and advantages over E. coli and other micro-organisms, B. subtilis is an ideal host organism for the production of recombinant proteins.
Interesting application possibilities are found in the field of technical enzymes (such as lipase and protease for washing agents). Besides proteins, other molecules, whose production is catalyzed by enzymes, can be obtained. For example, DSMs vitamin B2 is produced in industrial scale with the help of B. subtilis. A long-term goal is also the production of active agents for the pharma industry.
